Sing for Joy! Come and Sing 2025, with Bob Chilcott We will be focussing on A Little Jazz Mass; and Five Days that Changed the World;. Our accompanist for the day will be Andrew Wicker, and we will also be joined by Peter McLoughlin on double bass. Andrew is an amazing musician who regularly plays at the Albert Hall, and he is also a composer. Pete plays with Swindon Symphony Orchestra and is a former singer with Swindon Choral Society. Hailed by The Observer as “a contemporary hero of British choral music”, Chilcott is renowned as both a conductor and composer. Born in Plymouth in 1955, the family soon moved to Watford where he joined the church choir. He then sang with the choir at Kings College, Cambridge as a chorister and choral scholar, and joined the vocal group The King’s Singers. Chilcott became a full time composer and conductor in 1997, and has composed a large catalogue of choral music that reflects his broad view of musical styles and genres. He is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Singers and is conductor of the Birmingham University Singers. He has guest-conducted choirs in more than thirty countries. Malmesbury Abbey Concert, October 15 2022 The programme opened with Bruckner’s Locus Iste, sung a cappella. The voices were well balanced despite the relatively low number of Tenors and Bass, and the whole choir worked as a team. This continued with the popular Panis Angelicus where diction was clear and the accompaniment by the excellent Organist Simon Hogan, very sensitive. For me the highlight from the three Soloists: Elizabeth Britton Soprano, Michael Burgess Tenor and Patrick Osborne Bass, was in the trio section of the Benedictus in Schubert’s Mass in G. Their lovely voices were well matched and the singing lyrical. Swindon Choral Society produced a high standard of music throughout the evening. The Soprano section produced a beautiful sound soaring over the higher notes, ably supported by the strong lower voices. We very much look forward to welcoming our American cousins for this exciting event. The Macon choir has joined us before, singing Britten's War Requiem in October 1995. BIG Concert Fundraising Past performances include the Passions of Bach, Requiems from Mozart to Rutter by way of Howard Goodall's Eternal Light, Britten's War Requiem, and many familiar oratorios, notably, A Child Of Our Time and The Dream of Gerontius, and most recently the first half of The Christmas Oratorio. The Armed Man, by Karl Jenkins has also featured. For a complete list of our concerts, please visit our Concerts pages. We enjoy performing with professional orchestras and soloists.
