About Swindon Choral Society

Swindon Choral Society, comprising about 80 singers, perform 3 or 4 concerts each year in Swindon and the surrounding area. During its 90-year existence, it has performed most of the main choral works as well as lesser known pieces, first performances, commissions and lighter repertoire. For many years, we have been under the leadership of Robin Nelson who has written a number of works which we have performed.

For many years, the Society had a flourishing relationship with a church in Salzgitter, Swindon's twin town and enjoyed a number of exchange trips singing a variety of works. Other international collaborations have also taken place as well as choir tours to Venice, Tuscany and Budapest.

As with many organisations, we weathered the Covid period with our commitment to music and the Society,  We returned, post-Covid, with fewer numbers but we have been slowly building up over the last couple of years. Since coming out of the Covid pandemic, we said goodbye to Robin Nelson, our musical director of 20 years, and welcomed Elinor Cooper as our new director. Under Elinor, we developed musically and had new experiences, like singing Choral Evensong in Salisbury Cathedral. Sadly, in the summer of 2025, Elinor resigned her post due to personal circumstances.

We have now embarked on a new journey, with Greg Hallam. Greg has been with the Society for a year as an interim director and has now accepted the position permanently. We look forward to an exciting collaboration.
